Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
